How do you tell someone nicely their oral hygiene is bad?

I have a very close friend, who has always had pretty teeth. Over the last couple years, they have let their oral hygiene go down hill. Teeth always look like they have plaque. Their breath is horrible all the time(probably from multiple cavities). Gums look red and swollen.
How can I politely talk to them about it without hurting their feelings?

That’s a really tough question. I’ve always been under the impression that being straight-forward and honest is the best way to go… but some people don’t like that.
If I were you, I would just tell them that you’ve noticed their oral hygiene decline and that, as their friend, you’re trying to help. They’ll probably be embarrassed, but someone’s got to tell them, right? Your mouth is an important thing to take care of.

Just come out with it. Ease into the conversation and explain you feel odd bringing it up, but if it was you, you would want someone to tell you.

Sure inicially she will probably be a little embarassed but if she is a close friend it won’t last long:)

I knew a lady who had HORRIBLE body odor. Eventually I came out and told her just how bad it was. I recomended some really nice smelling deoderants…..lol. She was’nt happy obviously, however a few weeks later I noticed she wasn’t smelling anymore.

Wrap up a bottle of Listerine for the holidays. Tell them it’s just because you liked the flavor and deny that you’re trying to pass a hint even if they ask about it. I’m sure they’ll still get the hint.

Unfortunately there is no "nice" way to tell someone this, and there may be factors like illness that you are not aware of. Some medicines discolor teeth and cause bad breath. There isn’t much you can do courteously except grin and bear it.

Just ask them in the most sensitive way if a rat crawled in their mouth and died.
