What are those white spots on tonsils?

Could this be a tonsil stone or something else?

Back in May, I was studying for my finals, when one night, I began to have this feeling in the back of my throat. I looked at the back of my throat and found nothing. I knew it was a tonsil stone because I’ve been dealing with them for the last couple of years. I never found it because it was behind my tonsil.

Now its starting to come out from behind it and now I’m not so sure if its a tonsil stone. Its very dark and almost black. I don’t smoke or drink or do drugs or anything of that sort. Its back there but I know I’ll throw up if I go too far back into my throat with a Q-tip.

Is this still a tonsil stone or something else?

Something else…a tonsil stone should be off-white in color.

i have this thing on my left tonsil, after researching, i see that it is a tonsil stone! i had never heard of this before. but it is annoying i can feel it there, ive gargled, coughed, etc. it wont budge. i tried sticking a qtip back ther but i cant i gag!!! any ideas???

Basically, it is a little blob of dead bacteria and white blood cells. It will eventually expel itself. They really stink if you get a chance to investigate. Sometimes by creating a negative pressure in your mouth (like pulling your throart forward…hard to describe), will make it come out sooner. You will probably be prone to these. I get little ones once or twice a year. Be patient…it’ll be gone one day

i dont think i can get my tonsils removed just because of this but i was wondering is there anything i can do to prevent them? they just started to come up within the last 1 and a half so it hasnt been too long. i was also wondering could a constant stuffy nose be the cause of it? ive a stuffy nose since i moved into my new apartment and that was about a month and a 1/2 ago.

so prevention tips, something that has worked for you?

The stuffy nose and tonsillitis are probably very closely related. You mentioned you just moved into your apartment? Is there new carpet maybe in there? New carpet has some really strong smells that are toxic to you from breathing them in constantly. Your tonsils are swelling in order to catch the toxins before they get into your chest/lungs etc. So when they swell they are just doing their job. I would try to look at the source which is probably something in your apartment causing all these problems. A doctor will probably just address your symptoms by like giving you nasal spray and pain killers for your tonsils. I recommend airing out your apartment really really good for a few days if that’s possible until the new smell goes away. If it’s not possible to leave windows open all the time at the very least leave windows cracked, especially at night when you sleep. As nice as it is to smell a new apartment it usually is doing more harm than good. Good luck to you.

I get tonsil stones all the time and I am always fooling with them, digging for them and its really anying and they give you bad breath. Does anyone know how to get rib of them???

First ever tonsil stone.?

I got my first ever tonsil stone yesterday. I had a fever, head ache, and problem swallowing so I saw my doctor who put me on Amoxicillin.
After reading lots of articles, I pushed the stone out myself.

Just because I got it once, does that mean I’m going to keep getting them?

Yes, you’ll probably keep getting them. In fact, you have probably had several already and you just haven’t noticed them. They happen just because of the "texture" of your tonsils. That is, your tonsils have little cavities in them where food becomes trapped and turns into tonsil stones. If your doctor put you on Amoxicillin, it wasn’t for the tonsil stones, it was because of a bacterial infection.

Usually my tonsiliths go away over night and I wake up with bad breath and a lump in my throat that i swallow, but for some reason this one has stayed for about a week. Is it bad for it to stay in so long? My gag reflex is extremely sensitive so I am scared to dig it out.

I use a Q-tip. I have a moderate gag reflex, but when I am alone in my bathroom, it doesn’t bother me when I gag a little bit. Besides I hate when I can feel them with the posterior part of my tongue and they smell horrible!

I’ve also heard of gargling with salt water, but have never tried it. You can use a 1/2 tsp. of salt to one cup of warm water.

It started with a gum infection possibly because of something I ate. Now the gums are almost okay but my tonsils hurt. Why is that? What can I do?

I’m also feeling cold.

There’s nothing you can do beyond rest and possibly antibiotics, which you will need to see a doctor for. You can try a warm, salt-water gargle. Since this started with a gum infection, you probably ought to seek medical advice.

I have suffered from tonsil stones for a number of years now but have never went to the doctor about it. I was wondering, if anyone else suffers from them?
If you dont know what they are, they are yellow-white lumps that form in your tonsils and can cause bad breath. It also feels like a foreign object is lodged at the back of the throat.
I was wondering if there is anything the doctor can actually do for tonsil stones? I have one in my throat just now and I can see it. Several websites have suggested using a cotton bud to dislodge it but i tried it and i gagged

You are probably having problems because the stones are embedded. For the vast majority of people, calculi of the tonsils cause no real problems or symptoms. Sometimes you can actually scrape them away. Tonsilloliths contain a mixture of bacteria, dead white blood cells, debris and particles of food. Sometimes they can cause problems if particles lodge in the tonsillar crypts and continue growing.

If they are causing you no problems then they are best left alone- they don’t really require treatment, you can actually try and suck them out yourself with a medicine dropper- but this will only work if the stones are very small. If the stones are embedded this could be why you are unable to remove them yourself anymore.

For some people they can be problematic and cause recurrent bouts of infection, bad breath and sore throat. If this is the case then there are three options- either removing the tonsils completely, removal of the calculi itself- this is done with a ear curette (it’s a metal stick with a loop at the end) or laser resurfacing, which is done under local. You’d need to be referred to ENT either way.

To be honest, tonsillectomy is quite drastic and the stones can still occur again even if you have had the tonsils removed. Have a chat with your GP. If you have a strong gag reflex, they can be difficult to remove or suck out.

How long does it take for a tonsil stone to come out?

I got my very first tonsil stone o n friday, but i want it out, i tried gargiling salt water, and im to scared to stick something down my throat to pick it out, its kind of on the edge, so, part of it is behind this outer flappish looking thing, how long does it take to come out natturally do you think??

no one really knows.
it could come out in a day or two or in a week or two or in a month or two or it may not just naturally come out at all.
if it stays in there and goes into your tonsil fully it may become embedded in there.

you should stick your finger in there and try to get it out that way. (thats the only way i could ever get them out).

i just had my tonsils out due to tonsil stones 16 days ago. my ENT said that when he cut into my tonsils tons of stones started coming out (sorry i know gross). so that goes to show that many of my tonsil stones that i couldn’t get out with my finger didn’t naturally come out on their own at all. they just stayed in there.

if it doesn’t go away and its really driving you nuts then go see an ENT.

You have tonsil stones bad bad bad. They are starting to get impossible to remove and are leaving holes in my tonsils.

yep you can and in fact i just had a tonsillectomy 4 weeks ago because i’ve had tonsil stones since i was 12 (i’m 23 now) and in the last couple years they have just gotten to the point that i couldn’t stand it anymore. my throat was always sore, i had bad breath, i felt like something was back there, i’d cough a lot, and i’d clear my throat ALL THE TIME. (just the clearing my throat part was an annoying enough sound to make me want my tonsils out lol).

when i went to the ENT in july he said he only saw like one tonsil stone in each tonsil and they were pretty small but i insisted there were more. sure enough after the surgery he told me that when he cut into my tonsils there were TONS of them so it was a very good decision on my part to have them out.

most regular drs will say there is no need to take out your tonsils and tonsil stones are nothing to be bothered by (but it seems like they haven’t experienced what i did for 11 yrs of my life)
i would skip the regular dr and head straight to the ENT.

first of all tonsil stones doesn’t just mean your tonsils are inflamed! tonsil stones are little peices of food that get stuck in your tonsils.
and NO the holes will not just heal themselves. they get bigger allowing for more to get stuck in there and if you can get the tonsil stone out it will get embedded in your tonsil.

Ever since I was 9 or so, I have been having these things called tonsil stones. You get them when your tonsils are very pitted, and food gets stuck in one of the pits and bacteria grows on it. Yeah, I know, it’s disgusting! Yeah… I used to get these all the time… when I had tonsils. I would put the back end of my toothbrush on my tonsil and push lightly and the little buggers would pop out. Disgusting, I know, but it works. Any yes they do STINK!! Have fun.

I noticed when I was sleeping a weird feeling in my throat, sure enough, once again I found a tonsilith in my left tonsil. This is like the 2nd time I’ve found one in my left one, I’ve had it twice in my right. Once I went to the doctor and he said that I needed antibiotics that it was just a bacterial infection. I always get these in December, every time I had it, it was in December. Does anyone know why?

The only way to be able to tell if antibiotics are required is to visit a doctor so that they can do a throat culture. Without a conclusive test (such as this) it is not possible to say without doubt that it is a bacterial infection. Also, the only way to recieve antibiotic medications is through a prescription from you doctor.
As to why this always happens in December, it is possible that your immune system always reaches a low point in December. This could be due to added stress from the holidays, cold weather etc.

Yea, they are yucky. This sounds really disgusting, but it works for me. I hate having tonsil stones so I get a q-tip and get it wet and try to pry it out. It’s hard not to gag, but having a tonsil stone can make you want to gag the entire day anyways. If you can’t see it, look in the mirror so, your tonsils are well lit. Hold out your tongue and cough. This encourages the stone to appear. You could get your tonsils removed, but they aren’t too hard to live with as long as you get them out as soon as you know they’re there. Good luck!

I found a couple of websites with tons of info… tonsil stones can also cause bad breath (they are made of sulpher, calcified nasal drip, and bacteria… ewwww), and so one of the sites is dedicated to that aspect of tonsil stones… but all very interesting!

I would at least see an ENT about it, and worst case scenario, if the stones are contributing to a really bad quality of life, you can have your tonsils removed. Just remember- your tonsils are there to catch this kind of debris before it goes farther into your throat!

sometimes I cough-up these disgusting whitish little clumpy ball shaped things from the back of my throat, yeah and well this has been going on for years. Tonsil "stones" are usually called tonsoliths by health care professionals. The term means – surprise – tonsil stones. Tonsils are covered by "crypts" or pits, basically, and "crud" easily gets built up in the crypts. Sometimes this crud sticks together enough to make little balls, or tonsoliths. Mostly, these are benign bits of goo that do nothing. Sometimes the harbour strep bugs but usually they are harmless. What you are coughing up could be tonsoliths, but they could also be bits of mucus from your nasal passages and sinuses.

Those are puss pockets, which is indicative of an infection. Go see your doctor and let him give you some antibiotics, which will get rid of them. Take Tylenol or Advil for the pain.
In regards to having your tonsils removed, only your doctor can make that diagnosis.

gargle with apple cider vinegar 3 times daily. also rub your forearms from the base of the thumb to the elbow crease.( make a fist, stick out your thumb–it should point up towards the ceiling and massage the base towards the elbow crease). this has always helped me

I only have one in the back of my throat, and I keep gargling with salt water 4 times a day…

Tonsil stones usually do come out on their own, and you’re doing the right thing by gargling with salt water.

Other things to try:
1. Gargle with Cepacol mouthwash–it may not dislodge your current stone, but it will kill the bacteria that contributes to the formation of large stones.
2. Press on the side of your neck where the stone is and cough HARD.
3. Gently use a q-tip or other small object (oral thermometer, etc…something with a rounded tip) to either scrape or push the stone out…use this as your last resort and be careful, as you don’t want to injure your throat or gag yourself.

Once the stone is out, I highly recommend the Cepacol mouthwash to prevent recurrence.

Sounds like you’ll have to have your mom (assuming you are underage) or dad take you to see an ear, nose & throat specialist. They will help you rid of the tonsilitis flareup for now, but they will also be able to determine if the tonsils (and adenoids) need to be removed. If so, enjoy all the ice cream, icicles, and jello you can eat!

Let your parent(s) know asap and good luck! Btw, if you do have to have the tonsils (and adenoids) taken out, it doesn’t take very long and you’re able to go home the same day, so don’t stress it as it may be the best thing for you.

About 4 hours ago i felt something stuck behind my throat. i
coughed and a small tonsil stone came out. but i still felt
something stuck. i figured if i keep coughing or swallowing
it would come out. i got home from school, i ate, drank a soda and it was still there. by that time i was annoyed. i

stone. but then i looked again annd i saw a bigger one right
underneath it. i looked online and saw some possible ways to get rid of it like using a q-tip, squeezing it, gargling with salt water. i tried everything but nothing worked. i touched it with a q-tip and the big tonsil stone did not budge. do you guys think it will come out in a day or two like all the rest of them do. cause i always get tonsil stones but they just fly out of my mouth when i cough. theyre never stuck like right now. i rarely get tonsil stones. maybe 1 every 3 months i cough one out. but this one is weird. what do you guys think.

I have them every now and then, and they are annoying little things! I understand that they are no cause for alarm, and they do get flushed whenever we swallow. The thing is, they stink and cause bad breath to an extent. The bigger ones cause discomfort when swallowing. Removing tonsils isn’t really the recommended solution for tonsil stones. Yes, both answers are correct to an extent. Generally bacteria causes this to happen. They can become painful. They will in time work there way out or you can go about removing them with a Q-tip, etc. To avoid this problem in the future, do what you can to keep your mouth clean. Brush more often, floss your teeth, and rinse or GARGLE with an antiseptic mouthwash.

No I don’t think you need to. I used to get them all the time but I agree with the person above me, ever since I started to floss and brush better I haven’t gotten one. But for now to get rid of them you can use a product called Rincinol. Just gargle with that and it will help. You can find it at CVS, or walgreens.

well i’ve had tonsil stones since i was 12 (i’m now 23).
my ENT said that the products out there people want you to buy pretty much tell you want you already know and there is no real way to prevent or get rid of them for good other than removing the tonsils.

i just had my tonsils out on friday cuz of my tonsil stones and while i’m having a crappy recovery like most people do i don’t think i’ll regret having it done in the long run.

You should really go to the doctor! I have tonsillitis now caused by strep bacteria and I ignored it for a good two weeks. By the time i went my tonsils were covered in the white stuff
Go to your regular family doctor.
For now what you can do is gargle with a warm salt water rinse or even mouth wash to clean some of the bacteria out of your throat and the warm water will alleviate your throat pain.
My best advice to you though is hurry to the doctor.

ENT specialist an am getting further treatment but nothin has worked yet. ive had this for 1 and1/2 yrs .i clean my teeth well twice a day, floss, use a listerine mouthwash and chew gum regulary. i thought it was my teeth but it isnt. as i went to my dentist and my teeth n gums are fine. i often get this burning sensation in the back of my throat, but i dont eat any sugary sweets or drinks that usually cause this, so does any1 no what this is? the doc thought i was acid reflux so i wen on tablets once a day for 8 wks but it made no diiference. i also was on nasule droplets for 4 wks, as my doc thought it cud be to do with my sinuses, but also no differenc. i get these white things from the back of my throat, which i tink may be tonsil stones but my doc also says that no medication can actualy prevent these, and i dont get them regulary anyway and my doc says getting my tonsils removed will make no differnece. so plz can any1 help me? it causes bad breath ALL the time-its gettin me down

no, i dont eat many spicy foods and have tried everything to prevent it, lke cutting out all the foods that can cause bad breath lke onion, garlic, coffee, alcohol etc. the doc says if it was my stomach, the acid reflux would have worked but they didnt make any difference. to make matters worse, im only 16, and its realy preventing me going out and having fun.

Sounds like you need to get some more tests done.
Let your doctor know how very much this is getting you understandable down.
And demand that something more is done about it.
There must be further tests that could be done at hospital.
But sometimes unless you demand it.
They dont really bother
because they dont see it as life threatening.

I have been having trouble with Tonsilloliths – a lot lately. bad breath, foreign object feeling deep inside the mouth and a lot of time wasted in front of the mirror, especially after brushing – trying to coax that thing out of my mouth. And then, that nasty foreign object automatically dropping into my mouth at odd times.

Researched online but found little information on how to prevent or get rid of this problem for good.

I noticed that the situation seems to be at its worst especially within a few days of my having cashew nuts. Once I realized that there might be a link, I gave up cashews for a while and noted the recurrence, and then again noted after having them regularly for a while. Cashews did seem to aggravate the problem.

Could someone else suffering from this problem share their experience? Or try it out – if cashews are part of the diet? Any other foods that could be causing the problem?

The most likely cause is dairy products eaten later at night ie milk cheese etc and then the bacteria settling on your tonsils, either way if you gargle as far back in your throat as possible every night before bed it should help. I used to drink a glass of milk every night but stopped about 4 months ago and haven’t had a problem since.

I am thinkg of a surgery of tonsils because I usually got tonsillitis and stinky white balls (tonsil stones) in my throat and tonsils. So I am very nervous for that decision, I have asked several questions for my doctor and he says "you need a tonsillectomy and nasal cauterization because of your nasal turbinates and Tonsilloliths". I would like if someone there knows if after surgery my tonsil stones will really desappear and I will be able to breath normally. Sorry if I am so straightforward but I am very nervous because I have heard people after that surgery has suffered wording & nasal problems.

Usually it’s the adenoids that interfere with breathing, but occasionally the tonsils are so huge, they can too.

The tonsil stones and bad breath are indeed annoyances, but breathing difficulties trump other reasons for tonsillectomy.

Speech is temporarily affected, but disappears after a week or two. The exception is if you have a short palate, a condition your ENT should recognize.

It just happened to me today during my fourth period yuk it smelt and i spat it out.

No but my sister suffers with them. She is very prone to throat infections, after having a bad bout of tonsillitis as a child, she has a lot of scar tissue in her throat. Hence the stones, they are bacteria build up in the cavities which can lead to infections.

Get a Good antiseptic mouthwash, and gargle after every meal.

Good luck with yours, i know they are gross.

PS my poor ss has to have her tonsils removed at 30.

I’m experiencing it since I was a child (tonsilloliths or white soft stones) seen in my tonsils, sometimes it’s inflamed, sometimes not. I do experience palpitations especially at rest. (since childhood days)

I have all the symptoms of Tonsilloliths and it is really pain ful. I have a sore throat, my ear hurts when i swallow , my tonsils are swollen, and I have embedded tonsil stones in the back of the mouth on tonsils. They’ve been there for weeks, and now they’re starting to impede my swallowing. I can’t stand having them there, but my gag reflex keeps me from just scraping them out. Is there any way I can remove them without seeing the doc? That seems like an arduous process…

I’ve had tonsils stones for a few months now. I’m having my tonsils removed this summer for them, so you might want to see an ENT doctor. But anyway, here are a few ways I get them out:

-You can numb your throat using one of those sore throat sprays, this helps to prevent gagging when you try to get them out.
-Try gargling with salt water or a Listerine type mouth wash, this can help to break them lose.
-I think the easiest way to get them out is by using a water pik. Use one with an adjustable water pressure, so you don’t hurt yourself.

It’s been going on occasionally for many years…even after brushing and gargling, I will be haunted by the taste of really foul breath at the back of my throat, and a little later a tiny chunk of solid but mushable crud comes up from my throat that smells absolutely awful. I did some research and came up with tonsilloliths, but that sounds like more of a calcified, hard mass. Any ideas? It’s such an icky thing when it happens and I’d love to prevent it from forming. My tonsils are intact, by the way.
It’s almost like this little thing has been festering in some little pocket in my throat…that’s what it feels like.
It’s not an infection…it doesn’t smell cheesy like that, and I’ve had this occasionally for about 20 years.

Sounds like tonsillitus( its called infection) ( older you get the harder it is on you to have them removed) to me but I cant say for sure… try going to a dr .. must not worry you too bad if youve put it off this long!!

I get this white thing on my tonsil and when i get it out it smells really bad and leaves a hole. I dont know if i should just not worry about it because i went to the doctor and he was just like whatever. But it hurts really bad and it comes back every week. And right before i get it i have like a day that i feel like i have a sinus infection. I dont know what is going on but i’d really like to know.

The tonsils gather up rubbish, germs and stuff and push them out through those "holes". Yes, it smells AWFUL, but it’s waste material that needs to be expelled because if it stays in the body, it could cause infections and other problems. My guess is that in your case it’s from the sinsuses, since you say the day before you feel as though you have a sinus infection. The tonsils are just doing their job!

It’s a pity the doctor couldn’t have explained this to you, but you really don’t need to worry – it’s normal. It’s only if you have it all day and every day and a continual sore throat that you might need antibiotics, because that would suggest that the tonsils are being overloaded with rubbish and finding it difficult to deal with it all. If they are, there is clearly an on-going underlying infection that needs antibiotic treatment to clear it up and allow the tonsils to recover so they can do their job properly without being overwhelmed.

I’ve been getting these stupid things for about 5 years, but they’ve been occurring more often in the past 6 months. I’ve attributed it to sinuses and the allergy season causing more post-nasal drip than usual (sorry, gross I know) … Anyway, I’m 23 and do not want to get my tonsils removed. I’ve tried gargling with listerine, warm salt water, lemon & cayenne tea, you name it, I still get them. Then I have to dislodge them with a Q-tip and that’s a whole other story as anyone with this annoying condition knows. I removed almost 20 of them (big and small) from just one tonsil this morning! So, basically I’m wondering if anyone has had any success in preventing the stones before they even happen. Please do not tell me to get my tonsils taken out! I’m too old and the risks are too high.

I’ve never had any success so far. I didn’t even know what they were until a few days ago myself and I’ve evidently had them for a while. I would suggest asking your general practitioner how to go about removing them properly.

This morning I coughed up my first tonsil stone while brushing the back of my tongue. At first I thought it was some sort of weird aftermath from the Hi-Chew candy I had been eating (A Japanese candy similar to Starbursts, but more soft and gummy in texture), but it was indeed a tonsil stone.

Don’t waste money going to the doctor. Tonsil stones won’t hurt your brother, although they are annoying. All he needs to do is get a Q-tip and run it along his tonsils each morning to dislodge the forming stones. Then he should gargle with warm, salty water to rinse any remaining debris off. The water will also get into the "crypts" in the tonsils and help rinse out the bacteria that collect there, feeding on food particles.

The smell is awful, and it is due to the bacteria. When the stones are cleaned off and the tonsils are rinsed, the smell will disappear.

Antibiotics are not effective because they cannot reach into the tonsil crypts to kill the bacteria. So the doctor will just tell you to clean them, like I just did.

I’ve had them for about a year now . . I didn’t really think I needed to go see a doctor, so I didn’t. They don’t come too often, but every now and then I get em. I forget the medical name for it, honestly, but it’s very common. It’s a buildup of food particles that causes bad breath. There’s some at-home remedies you can do to be rid of it, like gargling salt water, etc.

But I usually just pick them out with long tweezers…. which I wouldn’t recommend doing as that can be pretty dangerous!!!
