One major reason for painful gums is having food stuck between your teeth.

Never ever ignore swollen gums infection.

This could be the start of something that ends in the removal or falling out of a significant number of your teeth.

It’s that serious.

There are several ways how to avoid bad breath

It depends on the cause.

If you are preparing to eat a ton of garlic, then you can expect bad breath (and the feeling that the smell is coming out of your skin as well)

Don’t worry.  Lots of people get them.

Gum infection or disease, can be known as periodontal disease. This is an infection of bone and tissue around your teeth.

Gum diseases get in under the gum line and break down the gum tissue.

The 2 stages of this gum infection

Gingivitis
which is fairly easily treatable, where you have reddened and bleeding gums, especially seen after brushing or flossing, and

Periodontal disease
which is very serious, where the bacteria in the mouth grow and damage the bone that supports the teeth, you get pus in your mouth, the gums shrink back and you may have to get your teeth pulled out or they could just fall out by themselves.

• Suffer from diabetes
• Are suffering a lot of stress

First, remove your plaque

All of us develop plaque;  soft plaque needs to be removed by regular brushing with a good quality toothpaste and hard plaque (tartar) has to be taken off by a dentist.

Yes, buy a tongue scraper if you get a build up of matter on you tongue on a regular basis.

Then use the thing, every day, twice a day.

And use it properly.

Do not rub the daylights out of your tongue. Just gently scrape the build up off and then cover your tongue very lightly with a little good quality toothpaste for a minute or so.

The toothpaste should not be a highly foaming, soap filled popular brand. It should be a toothpaste that does not dry out your mouth.

Rinse off and use a good quality mouthwash to complete the process. Again not a drying mouthwash – beware of the alcohol content of popular brands.

Don’t you just hate it when you’ve had a meal and you get a piece of food jammed between your teeth and for some reason, you can’t get to it with a toothpick or piece of floss at the time and you end up with a gum infection swelling at the base of your tooth.

Then when you can get to it, out comes the piece of food with a spurt of blood and your gum aches for ages.

What are those white spots on tonsils?

Sometimes a sore throat just needs something simple like a gargle made up with salty water or a spoonful of honey dripped down the tongue.

I’m going to a job interview and I dont want my breath to be smelly during the interview. I also dont want to be eating mints or gum to rid the bad breath for it may be rude. What are some effective ways to rid bad breath? Also what are some good products for it?

You should be brushing after every meal, roughly three times per day for at least two minutes at a time. You should be using floss after every meal, and use mouthwash and a tongue scraper at least twice each day. Pay attention to what kinds of foods that you are eating. Also, do you have problems with dry mouth? Dry mouth and post nasal drip can cause bad breath, so keep hydrated. Have regular dental checkups (roughly once every six months) to ensure that you do not have cavities or gum disease. Also, you should go to the doctor if it is a concern for you, since Underlying health conditions like diabetes can cause bad breath.

You might want to avoid gum and mints that contain sugar because sugar actually FEEDS the bad breath-causing bacteria!

Back in May, I was studying for my finals, when one night, I began to have this feeling in the back of my throat. I looked at the back of my throat and found nothing. I knew it was a tonsil stone because I’ve been dealing with them for the last couple of years. I never found it because it was behind my tonsil.

Now its starting to come out from behind it and now I’m not so sure if its a tonsil stone. Its very dark and almost black. I don’t smoke or drink or do drugs or anything of that sort. Its back there but I know I’ll throw up if I go too far back into my throat with a Q-tip.

Is this still a tonsil stone or something else?

Something else…a tonsil stone should be off-white in color.

The stuffy nose and tonsillitis are probably very closely related. You mentioned you just moved into your apartment? Is there new carpet maybe in there? New carpet has some really strong smells that are toxic to you from breathing them in constantly. Your tonsils are swelling in order to catch the toxins before they get into your chest/lungs etc. So when they swell they are just doing their job. I would try to look at the source which is probably something in your apartment causing all these problems. A doctor will probably just address your symptoms by like giving you nasal spray and pain killers for your tonsils. I recommend airing out your apartment really really good for a few days if that’s possible until the new smell goes away. If it’s not possible to leave windows open all the time at the very least leave windows cracked, especially at night when you sleep. As nice as it is to smell a new apartment it usually is doing more harm than good. Good luck to you.

There’s nothing you can do beyond rest and possibly antibiotics, which you will need to see a doctor for. You can try a warm, salt-water gargle. Since this started with a gum infection, you probably ought to seek medical advice.

If they are causing you no problems then they are best left alone- they don’t really require treatment, you can actually try and suck them out yourself with a medicine dropper- but this will only work if the stones are very small. If the stones are embedded this could be why you are unable to remove them yourself anymore.

For some people they can be problematic and cause recurrent bouts of infection, bad breath and sore throat. If this is the case then there are three options- either removing the tonsils completely, removal of the calculi itself- this is done with a ear curette (it’s a metal stick with a loop at the end) or laser resurfacing, which is done under local. You’d need to be referred to ENT either way.

To be honest, tonsillectomy is quite drastic and the stones can still occur again even if you have had the tonsils removed. Have a chat with your GP. If you have a strong gag reflex, they can be difficult to remove or suck out.

you should stick your finger in there and try to get it out that way. (thats the only way i could ever get them out).

i just had my tonsils out due to tonsil stones 16 days ago. my ENT said that when he cut into my tonsils tons of stones started coming out (sorry i know gross). so that goes to show that many of my tonsil stones that i couldn’t get out with my finger didn’t naturally come out on their own at all. they just stayed in there.

if it doesn’t go away and its really driving you nuts then go see an ENT.

when i went to the ENT in july he said he only saw like one tonsil stone in each tonsil and they were pretty small but i insisted there were more. sure enough after the surgery he told me that when he cut into my tonsils there were TONS of them so it was a very good decision on my part to have them out.

most regular drs will say there is no need to take out your tonsils and tonsil stones are nothing to be bothered by (but it seems like they haven’t experienced what i did for 11 yrs of my life)
i would skip the regular dr and head straight to the ENT.

first of all tonsil stones doesn’t just mean your tonsils are inflamed! tonsil stones are little peices of food that get stuck in your tonsils.
and NO the holes will not just heal themselves. they get bigger allowing for more to get stuck in there and if you can get the tonsil stone out it will get embedded in your tonsil.

Yea, they are yucky. This sounds really disgusting, but it works for me. I hate having tonsil stones so I get a q-tip and get it wet and try to pry it out. It’s hard not to gag, but having a tonsil stone can make you want to gag the entire day anyways. If you can’t see it, look in the mirror so, your tonsils are well lit. Hold out your tongue and cough. This encourages the stone to appear. You could get your tonsils removed, but they aren’t too hard to live with as long as you get them out as soon as you know they’re there. Good luck!

I would at least see an ENT about it, and worst case scenario, if the stones are contributing to a really bad quality of life, you can have your tonsils removed. Just remember- your tonsils are there to catch this kind of debris before it goes farther into your throat!

Other things to try:
1. Gargle with Cepacol mouthwash–it may not dislodge your current stone, but it will kill the bacteria that contributes to the formation of large stones.
2. Press on the side of your neck where the stone is and cough HARD.
3. Gently use a q-tip or other small object (oral thermometer, etc…something with a rounded tip) to either scrape or push the stone out…use this as your last resort and be careful, as you don’t want to injure your throat or gag yourself.

Once the stone is out, I highly recommend the Cepacol mouthwash to prevent recurrence.

No I don’t think you need to. I used to get them all the time but I agree with the person above me, ever since I started to floss and brush better I haven’t gotten one. But for now to get rid of them you can use a product called Rincinol. Just gargle with that and it will help. You can find it at CVS, or walgreens.

i just had my tonsils out on friday cuz of my tonsil stones and while i’m having a crappy recovery like most people do i don’t think i’ll regret having it done in the long run.

I just recently discovered that the little yellow and smelly boogerish things i’ve been spitting out for the past two months is Tonsillolith.

What are the procedures to keeping my breath from smelling bad?
what is the type of doctor i am suppose to see? Pediatrician?
Do i gotta do surgery to remove it?
is having a sore throat go along with it? cause i’ve been having a little sore throat ever since i had this problem and it hasn’t been going away.

You should really go to the doctor! I have tonsillitis now caused by strep bacteria and I ignored it for a good two weeks. By the time i went my tonsils were covered in the white stuff
Go to your regular family doctor.
For now what you can do is gargle with a warm salt water rinse or even mouth wash to clean some of the bacteria out of your throat and the warm water will alleviate your throat pain.
My best advice to you though is hurry to the doctor.
