One major reason for painful gums is having food stuck between your teeth.

Food that gets jammed between teeth should be removed as soon as possible, with a gentle toothpick motion or with dental floss or dental pics.

If you are not using any of these items, how on earth are you expecting to get food trapped between your teeth out of there and to relieve pressure on your gums which of course can result in mild to serious gum infection.

It is easy to forget to do this extra oral hygiene stop, but forget it at your peril.

Never ever ignore swollen gums infection.

This could be the start of something that ends in the removal or falling out of a significant number of your teeth.

It’s that serious.

Swollen gums may be accompanied by blood when you brush your teeth.

This is probably not painful, but puzzling, until you realise that the presence of blood means that you have gingivitis and unless you treat it with the right products that swollen gums infection could end in in tears before bedtime (and you having to take your new dentures out at bedtime to put in that glass beside the bed).

Gum infection is a serious dental problem and one that has to be addressed before the oozing pus stage is reached otherwise you are in real danger of losing your teeth.

When you brush, if you get bleeding gums (gingivitis) that’s the point at which you need to alter your dental hygiene habits.

Gum infection or disease, can be known as periodontal disease. This is an infection of bone and tissue around your teeth.

Gum diseases get in under the gum line and break down the gum tissue.

The 2 stages of this gum infection

Gingivitis
which is fairly easily treatable, where you have reddened and bleeding gums, especially seen after brushing or flossing, and

Periodontal disease
which is very serious, where the bacteria in the mouth grow and damage the bone that supports the teeth, you get pus in your mouth, the gums shrink back and you may have to get your teeth pulled out or they could just fall out by themselves.

You could be more inclined to gum infection if you

• Suffer from diabetes
• Are suffering a lot of stress
• Chew or smoke tobacco
• Have uneven teeth or poor fillings
• Have hormonal fluctuations
• Have a bad diet
• Don’t have good oral hygiene

Cure gum infection by avoidance and treatment

First, remove your plaque

All of us develop plaque;  soft plaque needs to be removed by regular brushing with a good quality toothpaste and hard plaque (tartar) has to be taken off by a dentist.

Mild cases can be rectified by brushing with a good toothpaste (most popular brands have too many drying agents in them, so beware), flossing every day and going to see your dentist regularly.

In advanced cases, you may need antibiotics or even surgery.

If you have gum swelling that is irritating or painful, you must not ignore it.

You may have some food or other item lodged in your gum or stuck between gum and teeth. This needs to be gently removed before your gum gets infected.

Your oral hygiene routine needs to include attention to gums, ensuring you clean between your teeth with a pic and/or floss.

You should also use mouthwash regularly against gingivitis, but it should be a mouthwash that is not full of alcohol compounds that dry your mouth out and have the potential to give you more problems.

Don’t you just hate it when you’ve had a meal and you get a piece of food jammed between your teeth and for some reason, you can’t get to it with a toothpick or piece of floss at the time and you end up with a gum infection swelling at the base of your tooth.

Then when you can get to it, out comes the piece of food with a spurt of blood and your gum aches for ages.

Happens to us all from time to time.  We just have to ensure we keep up with a good oral hygiene procedure whenever we can and keep up with a good quality toothpaste, mouthwash and flossing routine.

And once you’ve addressed the problem, you need to be vigilant with your oral hygiene so the problem doesn’t return. You don’t want to be losing teeth over a gum infection!

Conditions such as gingivitis are relatively easy to treat in the early stages, but you really don’t want such infections getting out of control.

Keep your teeth really clean; clean morning and night, floss daily and use a mouthwash that is not full of alcohol (because it will dry your mouth out and make you susceptible to smelly, painful tonsil stones.
