Warning: Icky. What are these foul-smelling tiny chunks I find at the back of my throat?

It’s been going on occasionally for many years…even after brushing and gargling, I will be haunted by the taste of really foul breath at the back of my throat, and a little later a tiny chunk of solid but mushable crud comes up from my throat that smells absolutely awful. I did some research and came up with tonsilloliths, but that sounds like more of a calcified, hard mass. Any ideas? It’s such an icky thing when it happens and I’d love to prevent it from forming. My tonsils are intact, by the way.
It’s almost like this little thing has been festering in some little pocket in my throat…that’s what it feels like.
It’s not an infection…it doesn’t smell cheesy like that, and I’ve had this occasionally for about 20 years.

Sounds like tonsillitus( its called infection) ( older you get the harder it is on you to have them removed) to me but I cant say for sure… try going to a dr .. must not worry you too bad if youve put it off this long!!

Those really do sound like tonsilloliths, which are a cause of halitosis. You could gargle with salt water, it’s supposed to help. I used to get those when I was younger. I hope you find something that works!

it sounds like good old fashioned plaque and tartar (the stuff that build up on your teeth that we brush off twice a day to stop them rotting). what you describe is quite normal and happens from time to time. when you brush your teeth make sure you also give your tongue, inner cheeks and gums a quick once over. you can also try gargling with an antispetic mouth rinse after you brush. if you are worried that you are not getting all the gunk off your teeth you can ask your dentist for something called disclosing tablets. these are a tablet that you chew but do not swallow, but it will colour any plaque that you have missed pink, so that you can brush again and get it all off.
otherwise, sorry but it just happens to some people.
the only other explanation I can think of is oral thrush, which will leave a white coating over your tongue, back of mouth and throat. this could be the culprit if you have recently been on antibiotics but it probably would not smell like you describe.
it is unlikely to be tonsilsitis unless you have other syptoms, such as a sore throat, temperature, and general malaise. if it is tonsilitis then a course of antibiotics will probably shift it. try opening your mouth wide in front of a mirror and saying "aaahhhh", if you can see a really inflamed area at the top of your throat it could be that.
however from the way you describe t as an occasional and random event this is unlikely.
